Robin Roberts, the Hall of Fame pitcher nicknamed “Whiz Kid,” died May 6 at his Florida house. He was 83.
Roberts led the Philadelphia Phillies towards the National League pennant in 1950 by pitching a 10-inning victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was the Phillies very first pennant in 35 many years, according for the Extended Island Press.
That was just the beginning of Roberts’ illustrious overall performance — from 1951 to 1955 he maintained the best record in baseball using a fastball that was thought to be about 100 mph. Furthermore, in 1952 alone, he won 28 games inside a row, according to the Press.
Upon retiring from baseball, Roberts worked at a brokerage firm, nevertheless, later in life he returned to the sport he loved and coached baseball at the University of South Florida.
